Heli-Skiing

Sun Valley Heli-Ski/EpicQuest (208/622-3108 or 800/872-3108, www.epicquest.com ) offers a variety of chopper-drop packages that leave from the Sun Valley Gun Club across from Trail Creek Cabin. To go diving through the untracked fluff, all you’ll need is intermediate or better skiing skills and a small trust fund. A full day (with 5-6 runs for a total of around 10,000 vertical feet) costs about $1,100 per person.

Cross-Country Skiing

The Wood River Trails system runs 19 miles from Hulen Meadows north of Ketchum all the way south to Bellevue along a former Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way. Three miles north of Ketchum, the Lake Creek Trails offer a 10-mile network of loops on the west side of the Big Wood River. The regularly groomed trails are part of the North Valley Trail System, which requires a $17 trail pass.

Sun Valley Resort’s Nordic Center (208/622-2250, day passes $24 adults, $15 seniors, $10 ages 12 and under), just past the lodge up Trail Creek, has 25 miles of groomed trails on the snow-covered golf course and surrounding hills and canyons. The trails are meticulously groomed, including a set of narrow-spaced tracks provided especially for kids. The best steeps are on the Diamondback Trail across the road, as it climbs to a ridge for a good view of Ketchum. Rentals and lessons are available.
